Do your legs feel significantly better when you keep them elevated?

Can you see bulging varicose veins or spider veins?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of the above, you may have Varicose Vein Disease.

Who Gets Varicose Veins?

Generally speaking, people who stand for long periods of the day, especially if they have a history of pregnancy or family history of varicose veins, are at an increased risk of developing Varicose Vein Disease. The veins of our legs rely on valves on the inside of the veins to help ensure that the flow of blood in the veins is up, toward the heart, and not back down, towards the feet.

When the superficial veins of the legs s t r e t c h o u t over time, the valves on the inside of the veins no longer do such a great job of preventing the blood from dropping back down to the feet and so the blood in these veins backs up and causes the leg to swell and/or feel heavy or tired, in addition to other symptoms.

How Can I Find Out If I Have Varicose Vein Disease?

The best way to find out if your symptoms could be due to varicose veins is to come in for a consultation.

Step 1: Consultation and Diagnosis

When the superficial veins of the legs s t r e t c h o u t over time, the valves on the inside of the veins no longer do such a great job of preventing the blood from dropping back down to the feet and so the blood in these veins backs up and causes the leg to swell and/or feel heavy or tired, in addition to other symptoms.

What Happens If I Do Nothing?

For some, varicose veins are mostly cosmetic or an occasional annoyance they ascribe to “getting older.” For others, it is a major problem that gets in the way of proper exercise or sleep and in the worst cases can lead to venous ulcers.

Varicose Veins are a progressive disease which means that once they start, they generally tend to get worse over time. Compression stockings and regular daily exercise can help slow down progression, but there is unfortunately no treatment to return a diseased varicose vein back to its former elasticity and shape
The good news is that we can close the varicose veins and reroute the blood flow through deeper healthier veins that generally maintain their shape better, which helps alleviate and often resolve symptoms.
