Welcome to Our Page on Nighttime Tingling of the Feet and Toes

At Renew Vein and Vascular, we are dedicated to raising awareness about peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and its associated symptoms, including nighttime tingling of the feet and toes. Explore our informative guide to learn more about this common symptom and its connection to PAD.

Understanding Nighttime Tingling of the Feet and Toes

Nighttime tingling, also known as nocturnal paresthesia, refers to a sensation of pins and needles, numbness, or tingling in the feet and toes that occurs primarily at night while resting or sleeping. This sensation can range from mild discomfort to more severe sensations that disrupt sleep.

How Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Contributes

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a condition characterized by the narrowing or blockage of arteries in the limbs, most commonly the legs. In individuals with PAD, reduced blood flow to the feet and toes can lead to nerve damage, causing sensations of tingling or numbness, particularly at night when circulation may be further compromised.

Risk Factors for Nighttime Tingling of the Feet and Toes

Several factors increase the risk of experiencing nighttime tingling due to PAD:

Smoking: Tobacco use damages blood vessels and accelerates the progression of PAD, increasing the likelihood of nerve damage.
Diabetes: Individuals with diabetes are at higher risk of developing PAD and peripheral neuropathy, which can cause tingling sensations in the feet and toes.
High blood pressure (hypertension) and high cholesterol: These conditions contribute to the development and progression of PAD, increasing the risk of nerve damage.
Aging: As individuals age, their risk of developing PAD and associated symptoms, such as nighttime tingling, increases.

Prevention Strategies

While some risk factors for nighttime tingling may be beyond our control, there are steps individuals can take to reduce their risk:

Quit smoking: Smoking cessation is crucial for preventing and slowing the progression of PAD.
Manage underlying health conditions: Keeping blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels under control can help prevent complications of PAD and reduce the risk of nerve damage.
Adopt a healthy lifestyle: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight can improve overall cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of PAD progression.

Treatment Options at Renew Vein and Vascular

At Renew Vein and Vascular, we offer a range of minimally-invasive treatments to address PAD and alleviate nighttime tingling of the feet and toes:

Angiograms: Diagnostic imaging procedures that identify blockages in the arteries.
Balloon Angioplasty: A minimally-invasive procedure that uses a balloon-tipped catheter to open blocked or narrowed arteries.
Atherectomy: A procedure to remove plaque buildup from artery walls.
Stent Placement: Placement of a small mesh tube (stent) to keep the artery open and improve blood flow.

Additionally, we provide comprehensive care for peripheral neuropathy, including advanced wound care techniques and nerve treatments to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Busting Myths Around Nighttime Tingling of the Feet and Toes

Myth: Nighttime tingling is a normal part of aging.
Reality: While aging can increase the risk of PAD and associated symptoms, nighttime tingling is not a normal part of aging and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Myth: Nighttime tingling will go away on its own.

I had a good experience overall! The staff was attentive and during my consultation the technician was very professional. The doctor explained the process of the treatment and options to move forward. I received multiple follow up calls and appointment availability was very easy and convenient. They were also very flexible with cancelations.

! Myself being a retired surgical nurse and medical asst. , I've seen some pretty scary practices, BUT... Renew Vein & Vascular (Dr.Azizi) we're very knowledgeable & professional at all times. And the new minimally & non-invasive procedures they can do for varicose vein's, are pretty state of the art! I'm sure that when i'm able to move forward, I will be going back to them for their minimally invasive procedure. Thank God I went to see them for a "consult" they even did an ultra sound (and i believe it was a promo no charge visit ) . I was sooo worried i might have clots, but NOPE! I didn't have any clots, AND now I have a the knowledge about the NEW modern vascular procedures available, NOT the OLD School surgery that had me too afraid to even think about it! So go see them, you'll be so happy you did, they are very professional and not at all pushy. ALSO, they work with just about ALL the insurance companies ! I highly recommend them. Best of luck!!
