Welcome to Our Page on Venous Ulcers of the Legs

At Renew Vein and Vascular, we believe in empowering individuals with knowledge about their vascular health. Explore our comprehensive guide to venous ulcers of the legs and learn how varicose vein disease can play a significant role in their development.

Understanding Venous Ulcers of the Legs

Venous ulcers are open wounds that typically occur on the lower legs and ankles. These ulcers are often a result of underlying venous insufficiency, where damaged or weakened veins fail to efficiently return blood to the heart, leading to pooling of blood in the lower extremities. Over time, this can result in tissue damage and the formation of painful ulcers.

How Varicose Vein Disease Contributes

Varicose vein disease is a common culprit behind venous ulcers of the legs. When the valves within veins become dysfunctional, blood can flow backward and accumulate, causing increased pressure within the veins. This elevated pressure can damage the surrounding tissue and eventually lead to the development of ulcers.

Risk Factors for Venous Ulcers

Several factors can increase the risk of developing venous ulcers due to varicose vein disease. These include

Genetics: A family history of venous insufficiency or varicose veins can predispose individuals to develop ulcers.
Age: Aging can weaken vein walls and valves, making them more susceptible to dysfunction.
Prolonged standing or sitting: Occupations or lifestyles that involve prolonged periods of standing or sitting can impair blood flow and increase the risk of ulcers.
Obesity: Excess weight puts added pressure on veins, exacerbating venous insufficiency.

Prevention Strategies

While some risk factors for venous ulcers may be beyond our control, there are steps individuals can take to reduce their risk:

Maintain a healthy weight and engage in regular physical activity to promote circulation.
Elevate legs when resting to alleviate pressure on veins.
Avoid prolonged periods of standing or sitting.
Wear compression stockings as recommended by a healthcare professional to support venous circulation.

Treatment Options at Renew Vein and Vascular

At Renew Vein and Vascular, we offer a range of minimally-invasive treatments to address varicose vein disease and promote healing of venous ulcers:

Compression Therapy: Graduated compression stockings or wraps help improve blood flow and reduce swelling.
Varithena, Clarivein, VenaSeal, RFA, Laser, and Foam Sclerotherapy: These advanced procedures target underlying vein issues, such as reflux and incompetence, to alleviate symptoms and prevent ulcer recurrence.
Advanced Wound Grafts and Biologics: We utilize cutting-edge wound care techniques, including advanced wound grafts and biologics derived from placental tissue, to promote tissue regeneration and facilitate ulcer closure.

Busting Myths Around Venous Ulcers of the Legs

Myth: Venous ulcers only affect older individuals.
Reality: While age can be a risk factor, venous ulcers can affect individuals of all ages, particularly those with underlying venous insufficiency.
Myth: Venous ulcers will heal on their own.
Reality: Without proper treatment, venous ulcers can persist and even worsen over time. Seeking professional care is essential for effective management and healing.

I had a good experience overall! The staff was attentive and during my consultation the technician was very professional. The doctor explained the process of the treatment and options to move forward. I received multiple follow up calls and appointment availability was very easy and convenient. They were also very flexible with cancelations.

! Myself being a retired surgical nurse and medical asst. , I've seen some pretty scary practices, BUT... Renew Vein & Vascular (Dr.Azizi) we're very knowledgeable & professional at all times. And the new minimally & non-invasive procedures they can do for varicose vein's, are pretty state of the art! I'm sure that when i'm able to move forward, I will be going back to them for their minimally invasive procedure. Thank God I went to see them for a "consult" they even did an ultra sound (and i believe it was a promo no charge visit ) . I was sooo worried i might have clots, but NOPE! I didn't have any clots, AND now I have a the knowledge about the NEW modern vascular procedures available, NOT the OLD School surgery that had me too afraid to even think about it! So go see them, you'll be so happy you did, they are very professional and not at all pushy. ALSO, they work with just about ALL the insurance companies ! I highly recommend them. Best of luck!!
